Find answers to common questions and learn how to get the most out of Family Legacy Gifts—for both your heirlooms (Legacy) and your family history (Heritage).
After signing in, if you don't have a plan yet you'll see the Welcome page. Click "Create Your Own Plan" to create your first plan. Give it a name (for example, "Smith Family Legacy") and an optional description. Once created, you can start adding items and building your Heritage right away.
The app has two modes. Legacy is for heirlooms and item stories (Items, Gallery, Plan). Heritage is for people, families, and your family tree. Use the Legacy / Heritage switch in the navigation to move between them. Your choice is remembered for next time.
In Legacy mode, open Items from the menu and click "Add Item". Enter the item name and choose a category for your plan. You can add a description, photo, estimated value, and video story. Click "Add Item" when you're done. You can also use "Quick Capture" from the Items page to add an item quickly with a photo (take one or choose an existing picture).
Switch to Heritage in the navigation (or open Heritage from the hub). Start with People: add ancestors and relatives, then open a person's profile to add life events, stories, and media. Next, create Families to link couples and children. Use Tree to see a pedigree-style view of your families.
Open Plan from the menu, then go to "Manage Invitations" or "Create Invitation". Enter the family member's email and choose a role (Viewer, Contributor, or Admin). Click "Create Invitation". You can send them the link by email (if your plan uses that) or copy the invitation link to share. They sign in or sign up and accept the invitation to join. Contributors can help with items and Heritage; Viewers can browse but not edit.
When adding or editing an item, use the "Video Story" or "Update Video" section to upload a short video. You can record on your phone or computer. Videos help your family hear the story in your own words. Maximum size is 200MB.
If you're a plan Admin or Owner, open an item (click it, then edit) and scroll to "Designate This Item". Choose a family member from the list and add an optional reason. This shows who the item is intended for without changing ownership now.
In Heritage mode, open People and click Add. Enter their name and details (birth, death if applicable, bio). Mark someone as Living when they are still alive—that hides death fields. After saving, open their profile to add a timeline of life events, stories, photos, and other media.
On a person's profile, use the Timeline tab to add life events (with dates or years) and the Stories tab to write longer memories. Expand an event or story to attach photos, audio, or documents that belong to that entry.
Upload photos, audio, or documents from a person's Media tab, from an expanded life event or story, or on a family's detail page. Media is attached to that specific person, event, story, or family. On a person's Media tab, you can set a photo as their profile photo.
In Heritage mode, open Families and add a family unit. Then add people as members with roles such as spouse/partner or child. You can also add someone to a family from their person profile. Admins and Owners can remove members when needed.
In Heritage mode, open Tree. Choose a root person and how many generations to show to explore couples and children in a pedigree-style view. Keep adding people and families so the tree stays complete.
On the Plan page you can see everyone in your plan and their roles. As a plan Admin or Owner you can send new invitations (Manage Invitations, Create Invitation). Viewers can browse items and Heritage. Contributors can add and edit items and Heritage records. Admins and Owners can manage the plan, designations, and remove Heritage records when needed.
If you belong to more than one plan (for example, your family and your spouse's), go to Profile. Under "Plan Participation List", click the plan you want to switch to. Your choice is saved for next time.
From the Items page, use "Quick Capture" to add an item quickly: take a photo or choose an existing picture, enter a name and optional category and value, then save. Great for capturing items on the go.
Videos must be under 200MB. If upload fails, try a shorter clip or compress the video. Supported formats include MP4 and other common video types. If you still have trouble, try a different browser or device.
Quick Capture needs permission to use your device's camera. If the camera view doesn't appear or you see "Camera access denied," your browser may be blocking access. Allow this site to use the camera: in Chrome, tap the lock or info icon in the address bar → Site settings → Camera → Allow; in Safari (iPhone), go to Settings → Safari → Camera and set to Allow, or use the per-site option if shown. If you previously chose "Block" or "Don't Allow," you must change it to Allow in the browser or device settings—the site cannot ask again until you do. You can still add a photo using "Choose photo" to pick an image from your device.
On the Sign In page, click "Forgot password?" Enter your email and we'll send a reset link. Check your inbox (and spam folder). The link takes you to a page to set a new password. If the link expired, request a new one from the Sign In page.
Invitation links are valid for a limited time. If the link doesn't open or says it expired, ask a plan Admin or Owner to send a new invitation from Plan → "Manage Invitations" or "Create Invitation". Sign in or sign up with the same email they invited.
Confirm you're logged in and have selected the correct plan in Profile (Plan Participation List). If you were invited, accept the invitation from the link first. Switch to Legacy for Items or Heritage for People, Families, and Tree. Viewers can see content but cannot add or edit; only Contributors, Admins, and Owners can create or change records. If lists are empty, the plan may not have items or Heritage data yet.
Your browser must allow this site to use the camera. In Chrome, open the lock or info icon in the address bar → Site settings → Camera → Allow. In Safari on iPhone, go to Settings → Safari → Camera and set to Allow (or change the setting for this site if shown). If you previously blocked camera access, you need to switch it to Allow in browser or device settings—the site can't prompt again until you do. You can still add items with a photo using "Choose photo" to pick an image from your device.
